This record could be titled "A Half Century of Showmanship" or "The Best of Fifty Years," for that's how long Lawrence Welk has been pleasing audiences with his inimitable band stylings and personality. From his radio beginnings in South Dakota during the 1920s to his formidably rated TV shows in the 1950s through '70s,the Welk band-wagon has traveled a widening spiral of appeal to every region, age and culture group in the country. To many he is Mr. Popular Music, an opinion this album supports with ten of the maestro's top record hits in a compilation never before offered to the public.

The key to Lawrence Welk's success exists in musical arrangements that feature a prominent melody line. Whether playing Jazz, polkas or pop songs of the day, his band practically invite the listener to sing alone - or to dance along, since Welk's beat is always lucid and lively. His "Champagne Music" sound is familiar throughout the world and delights today as it did forty years ago when Welk, with composer Frank Loesser, created his apt theme song, "Bubbles in the Wine".

What follows is an assortment of film music and popular standards which record buyers have acclaimed as Lawrence Welk's greatest. "Calcutta" is the bellwether song, appearing on the charts as America's number one hit in 1960 and '61. But the others also say something about this "showbiz" phenomenon" the gamut, from Broadway ("On the Street Where You Live") to Nashville ("Last Date") to Latin America ("Yellow Bird"), proclaims that anything will work that's performed joyfully and well. In no better terms is it possible to describe the wonderful music of Lawrence Welk.
